Victims of Mexico rains, floods increase to seventy-eight
As stated by reports, the storms affected five states, disrupting essential services, communication networks, and highways, displacing thousands and leaving many dead or unaccounted for. Even two weeks after the event, the government continues to document new fatalities while announcing a multimillion-dollar plan to aid affected communities and families.
The heavy rains, which occurred between October 7 and 11, struck Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico coast, as well as Hidalgo, Puebla, San Luis Potosi, and Queretaro. Coastal Veracruz experienced the most severe flooding. By October 11, federal authorities had reported 36 deaths, but the toll has grown as search operations recover additional bodies.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that two people previously reported missing have been found dead, while 23 remain unaccounted for. During a press briefing, Sheinbaum said the government is allocating significant resources to respond to the disaster.
The federal response includes $580 million for rebuilding the hardest-hit communities and direct financial support for victims, providing up to $1,150 per family and $2,900 for local businesses. Agricultural recovery efforts could receive up to $5,800 per farm, while $29,000 has been earmarked for rebuilding clinics.
