Mexico floods cause death of seventy-eight people

(MENAFN) Mexican authorities updated the death toll on Wednesday to 78 following the heavy rains and flooding earlier this month, as search teams continue efforts to locate missing persons, according to reports.

The extreme weather impacted five states, causing widespread disruption to services, communication networks, and highways, while displacing thousands and leaving numerous casualties. Weeks after the storms, officials continue to document new fatalities and have announced a multimillion-dollar plan to rebuild affected communities and support impacted families.

The rains, which occurred between October 7–11, struck Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico coast, along with Hidalgo, Puebla, San Luis Potosi, and Queretaro, with Veracruz experiencing the most severe flooding.

By October 11, 36 deaths had been recorded, but the number has risen as recovery operations continue. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that two previously missing individuals were found dead, while 23 remain unaccounted for.

During a press briefing, Sheinbaum said resources are being mobilized to respond to the crisis. In addition to a $580 million allocation to rebuild the hardest-hit areas, the federal government will provide direct support to victims, including up to $1,150 per family and $2,900 for local businesses. Aid for agricultural recovery could reach $5,800 per recipient, and $29,000 is earmarked for clinic reconstruction.
