Amnesty Slams UK–US Royal Visit Over Human Rights Concerns

(MENAFN) Amnesty International has strongly criticized the upcoming state visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla to the White House, describing it as “an act of national humiliation,” and urging the UK government to take a firmer position on human rights and international law, according to reports.

Kerry Moscogiuri, chief executive of Amnesty UK, said in a statement on Monday: “The Trump administration has relished tearing up 80 years of international human rights protections -- whether looking the other way when its ally Israel commits genocide, carrying out extrajudicial killings in the Caribbean Sea, or sanctioning ICC staff and human rights organizations."

She added: "The Trump administration has been enabled by governments, like the UK, which have failed to challenge the attacks on the international justice system the US and UK once helped create."

Moscogiuri further stated: "The UK Government and anyone representing it must stop appeasing Trump and recognize that further cowardice will only make matters worse. It is only by resisting, denouncing and pushing back against US attacks, that we can defend international law, standards and everyone’s human rights."

The state visit comes amid strained diplomatic relations, with US President Donald Trump previously criticizing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over his position regarding the US-Israeli war with Iran, alongside broader policy differences between the two allies.

Additional criticism has also emerged from opposition political figures in the UK, according to reports.
