Venezuela Eyes Expanded Energy Cooperation During India Visit

(MENAFN) Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodríguez is expected to focus on energy cooperation during talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week, as India continues efforts to diversify its oil imports amid ongoing disruptions in global energy markets.

Rodríguez, who arrived in India on Wednesday for her first official visit to New Delhi since assuming the presidency, is scheduled to hold discussions covering a broad range of bilateral issues. Topics on the agenda include energy, trade, investment, pharmaceuticals and healthcare cooperation.

Energy security is expected to be a central focus of the talks. India imports the majority of its crude oil requirements and has been seeking to expand its supplier network in response to uncertainty affecting traditional energy routes and markets.

The visit comes amid renewed interest in Venezuelan crude exports to India. Before trade restrictions imposed in 2019 significantly reduced commercial ties, India was one of the largest buyers of Venezuela’s heavy crude oil.

In addition to government meetings, Rodríguez is expected to attend the International Big Cat Alliance Summit and explore opportunities for greater economic cooperation between the two countries across several sectors.

India's energy strategy has undergone significant changes in recent years. Following the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict, Russia emerged as India's largest oil supplier, accounting for a substantial share of the country's crude imports. Discounted Russian oil helped Indian refiners manage costs and strengthen profit margins.

However, shifts in global energy markets and efforts by New Delhi to maintain a diversified import portfolio have increased interest in alternative suppliers, including Venezuela. The upcoming discussions are expected to explore how both countries can strengthen cooperation in the energy sector while expanding broader economic ties.
