Trump Drops Venezuela from US Counternarcotics List
“Given the positive advances achieved under the leadership of Interim President Delcy Rodriguez, I have determined that Venezuela should no longer be designated as having failed demonstrably,” Trump said in a document submitted to Congress.
The decision comes as Washington says political developments in Venezuela have opened additional opportunities for cooperation with governments across South America.
Trump said his administration had observed “increasing cooperation” from Venezuela’s interim authorities in efforts to target drug trafficking networks.
He highlighted the removal of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the killing of Jose Antonio Tovar, also known as “El Nino Guerrero,” whom Trump identified as the leader of the Tren de Aragua criminal organization.
The US president said Washington expects Venezuela’s government to continue making measurable progress in dismantling groups that the US describes as narcoterrorist organizations and in disrupting drug trafficking routes running through Venezuela toward the United States.
